2023 BMW i5 Electric Review

It is reported that the German site Focus Online claims that the I5 model will be built the BMW’s “fifth-generation” e-drive technology that is the same type of drive utilized in the iX3 and those two brand models that are new i4 as well as iX models. In the report that the i5 will not be built on the current generation of the 5 Series with the internal designation G30 instead, it will be based on the next-generation G60 that is expected due to being launched in autumn 2023, both as an electric combustion engine and an electrified saloon. This is made possible through the German family-owned automaker’s CLAR platform. This currently allows the i4 to operate in conjunction with the combustion engine versions that comprise the 4 Series, including the 4 Series Gran Coupe. The i4 shares a lot of the bodywork and design with the 4 Series Gran Coupe.

Performance & Specs

Potential technical details for an i5 have not been listed in the document, however, the power output of a coming M model is believed to exceed 700 horsepower, which is equivalent to 515 kW. The drive units in iX3 (210 kW on the rear axle) and the i4 (up to 200 kW in the front and up to 230 kW at back) along with IX (like that of the I4) offer a possible frame in this. While the performance information from both the iX xDrive 50 and the i4 M50 are different, even though they both use identical drive units in the rear and front. This is mainly due to the software that is tailored to the specific models as well as the battery.

BMW’s battery kit is made for prismatic cells. However, modules can take cells of various dimensions and chemical compositions. It’s hard to determine which battery BMW can accommodate in the i5 and in particular, what version of the i5 will receive which type of battery.

Interior

As per Focus Online, the interior of the i5 will be inspired by its predecessors, the iX as well as the i4. The curved display will be included as well as the center console that has touchscreens that can be used rather than physical buttons the cockpit will be more minimalist than the present 5 Series – but probably not as innovative in the same way as the iX.
