2022 Lexus IS 500 F Sport Review

It all began when an IS F, which debuted at the 2007 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The sports car was popular, however, Lexus chose not to release another model when the third-generation IS was launched five years later. However, just like any rivals, Lexus has decided to introduce their sub-brand of mild-performance that is similar to the BMW M Performance or Cadillac’s newly positioned V-Series. The brand is referred to as F Sport Performance, the models will sport aggressive styling and better performance, however, they do not have the characteristics of an actual F model. The first model in the F Sport Performance family is the IS 500 and it’s a good indication of what’s to be. It may not be as radical as the IS F, but it blends sport and comfort as well as being a hell of an amount of enjoyable.

New Design

The refreshed IS looks fantastic in its basic form however, its IS 500 F Sport Performance kicks things up a notch, as it’s distinct by a slender hood as well as a revised front bumper, and longer fenders. These modifications don’t instantly pop into the air, however, they allowed engineers to insert a 5.0-liter engine into an engine bay. The designers didn’t stop there, as this IS 500 has been outfitted with 19-inch Enkei wheels that are lighter than the ones that are found on the mainstream F Sport variant. The model with the highest performance features glossy black accents and dark chrome trim and black badges that indicate it’s an F Sport Performance variant. The changes are mostly subtle however, there’s no doubt that it’s the IS 500 when viewed from the rear. A four-pipe exhaust system that is stacked will make the car’s performance well-known as an ebony front spoiler and a distinctive diffuser reinforce that message.

Exterior & Interior

The exterior is beautiful, however, but the interior appears like it’s from the past as it’s almost identical to the model found on 2014 IS. This is a disappointment for a brand new car and the age of the car is apparent in the prominent location in the position of the player. Additionally, the car has poor switchgear, a subpar 8-inch infotainment unit, and some suspect materials. The bright side is that it is well-equipped with heated and cooled front seats that are encased in NuLuxe perforated upholstery. The buyers will also get an automatic dual-zone temperature control, power sunroof, and a heated steering wheel that sports the F Sport Performance badge. Other highlights include aluminum pedals, a 10 speaker Pioneer audio system as well as an LFA-inspired digital instrument cluster.

Although the interior isn’t exactly the main strength of the vehicle it’s larger than the size would suggest. There’s plenty of room in the front, however, the rear seats are quite small, with just 32.2 inches (818 millimeters) in legroom. It’s more spacious than that, and I could squeeze behind the driver’s seat with not too much trouble. The back seat isn’t the most relaxing trip, but a quick drive through town shouldn’t pose an issue as there’s plenty of legroom and headroom for adults. In terms of space, There are 10.8 cubic feet (306 liters) of storage space within the trunk. This can be expanded through folding back seats back. But, it’s not as big as rivals like those of Audi S4, BMW M340i, and Mercedes C43.

Engine

Although all of the mentioned competitors have an engine that is turbocharged, a 6-cylinder engine, Lexus believes that there is no substitute for displacement. This is why Lexus’ IS 500 has been outfitted with a naturally-aspirated 5.0-liter V8 engine that produces 472 horsepower (347 kW or 479 PS) as well as 395 pounds (536 Nm) of torque. It’s difficult not to love the engine because V8s are rapidly becoming endangered. It is also more powerful than other engines since the Germans can produce outputs from 349 horsepower (260 kW/ 354 PS) up to 385 hp (287 kW or 390 PS). The V8 is linked to an eight-speed auto transmission that only sends power to those wheels at the back. This arrangement allows the car to go between 60-100 mph (0-96 kilometers per hour) with a time of 4.4 seconds before reaching an average speed of 150 miles per hour (240 kilometers per hour). The numbers aren’t something to shrug off, but they aren’t the only ones. S4 and M340i both reach speeds of 60mph (96 kilometers per hour) with a time of 4.4 seconds and boast the fastest top speed of 150 miles per hour (250 kilometers/hour). It’s no surprise that the V8 is also quite thirsty, as the IS 500 has an EPA-estimated fuel efficiency of 17 mpg in the city 25 mpg on the highway, and 20 percent combined. The majority of Germans offer better ratings even with the all-wheel-drive standard for both the C43 or S4. Of course, purchasing a sports car based on fuel efficiency is similar to buying art simply because you love the frame. Instead, it’s about the experience, and that is the area where this IS 500 excels. The engine is a bit sluggish when you’re out and about, but when you push on the pedal, it roars into action and lets its presence be known. In addition, because of its naturally aspirated engine, it doesn’t need to wait for turbos to get spooling. The great news doesn’t end with the engine because it’s a great car to drive. IS 500 feels like a real sports sedan. It offers a great combination of sport and comfort and makes it an ideal everyday driver. Its steering is also great because it’s nimble and well-balanced. The back roads of Scottsdale were a total thrill because the car seemed perfectly balanced despite having slightly less balance due to the massive V8 that was up on the front. The car’s cornering was flawless, and the suspension also took in minor bumps without much effort. Much of this is due in part to the rear wheel drive platform aswell in the standard Dynamic Handling Package that features an adjustable suspension as well as the limited-slip differential. The car also has the Yamaha back performance damper as well as an upgraded braking system, with bigger discs. They are 14 inches (356 millimeters) in front as well as 12.7 inches (323 millimeters) in the rear. This means they are 0.8 as well as 1 inch (20 and 25 millimeters) bigger than the discs found with the regular model.

It’s about the same price as the Mercedes-AMG C43, but the Audi S4 and BMW 340i are less expensive, starting at $51,900 and $54,700, respectively.
